A great find – wrap up

The final versions of the “A great find” short story. Some remarks below.

Panacea - A great find page 1
Panacea - A great find page 2
Panacea - A great find page 3
Panacea - A great find page 4

  • I got rid of the texture layers, in the end I think this looks better.
  • A lot of page 2 and 3 is pretty redundant, I could have told the same thing probably in one page, certainly within one and a half.
  • Why the hell didn’t I draw the bag in image 2 page 3?
  • Ditto for image 1 page 4. He (Maqiloh)even refers to it in what he says.
  • That text is horrible!
  • I like the look of page 4 overall
  • Changed some small things on page 3, mostly added some green, it was very bleak
  • Twice within the span of just two pages basically the same close up of a hand reaching for the bag. Tsssss
  • Overall I like page 1 still best, but those trees in image one are really too small.

I decided to finally finish the last page of “a great find” first before continuing with the “real” pages. This one has has been sitting on my harddrive for ages now without any progress. The last week I’ve spend a great number of hours to get it finished. To completely there yet, but with one extra session I should be able to finish it.

Page 3 is done! Well, technically not completely done. A few minor details are missing, but after a very long session working on this I’d better get some sleep and really finish at a later time. Better get a fresh look at it later to do those final tweaks.

For now though, I think that the waterfall is a big improvement over the last post and the colouring as a whole went pretty smooth. Just like inking, I’m getting better at that. Yay! The pages are quite boring when looking back at them though. Whose brilliant idea was it to place this short story in a canyon with just rocks as background?

I just finished the flat colours of page 4 and am now working on the colours of page 3 and 4 simultaneously. Here is the center image of page 3… That waterfall… not too happy with that. More to follow in the coming week.

Woohoo, inking of the four pages is done. Now all I have to do is colour the final 2 pages and I’ve got this thing done… I did the largest part of the inking in one day, which almost killed me. But, I do seem to get faster in doing the inks. Let’s see if I can speed up the colouring as well. That way I might even get some pages of the actual comic done some day!

There is actually some text that should go on this page. But that’s so totally lame that I’ve left it off, at least for now. This whole story was a drawing pratice exercise so I never really spend that much time on the “story”. Maybe I will add the text balloons to see how that effects the overall look of the page.

Working late a couple of times in a row certainly doesn’t help in getting this page done. The initial sketch went pretty fast and smooth, but ironing out all the details is proving to be a lot of work. Great fun though, it’s been a while since I’ve done a page with just character shots. Not happy with everything that’s going on, but I like the overall look.

I’m editing the last row of images: I made some mistakes in where the characters are supposed to be compared to each other.

Page 3, the flat colours. With the colours it seems a lot less crowded than it did when inked. But that might just be me.

As with every step, this took me longer than expected. I keep on fiddling with details along the way. That doesn’t really help with getting it done quickly and can get pretty frustrating. Often adjusting a small detail somewhere leads to something else close by, etc.

Page 3 is on hold for a bit while I work on the first draft of page 4 (which is proceeding nicely).
