So what happened


After the last post I did in 2011 (27th of September) it got very quiet on this site. Not that I stopped drawing, but I didn’t bother with updating here. Also, in December I got together with Jan to work on a different project: a small computer game for the Ludum Dare competition. In this competition it’s the goal to complete a game from start to finish within 72 hours (as a team) or 48 hours (as an individual).

After we worked on that and got second place (!), we decided to really finish the game and polish the hell out of it. This is something we have been working on ever since. We also entered it in a different competition for Pokki (top 10 finish). Our little game “Together Alone” in an older version is still there to download for your pleasure. But, we are way beyond that version by now and the new and improved beta can be found at our new site: Qwok Games.

Other stuff. Well, Panacea is probably dead. Kinda ironic with that title. That project was way too ambitious for our own good. Lots of lessons learned however and some of the work is certainly still salvageable for my own pet project (which is probably also too ambitious, but you need a hobby!). I’ll start posting some of the stuff I did last year in the coming week(s). I’ll probably back date that stuff to approximately when I was actually working on it.

Faces 20… or is it

When quick sketches go wrong was my other title I thought of. This started out as a quick sketch before I wanted to work on something else, but grew into what you see now. Because of that I’m not all that happy with the pose, but I do like the way the rest (the colouring) turned out. I kept changing the pose when I really should have started over to get it right. Or just leave it at the face.. but there ya go.

Small updates


Avesa

Third post in the Panacea Character updates. Small edits, long post. Above is Avesa, whom I’ve posted before. I tweaked the colours: mainly her clothes and straightend some of the lines. Avesa is the second in command of the small mountain village mentioned two posts below. She is 174 centimeters tall and 43 years old. In an incident she lost her right leg.

Next up is Vorrak. The leader of the bad guys, The Meavanin. He’s a 50 year old, 186 centimeters tall warrior. I realy didn’t change anything here. Well, I added the shadow, but that’s it. This guy is done!

Someone who isn’t part of the first part of the story: Serille. She was also completely done, save for the weapons which I never got around to colour. So, did that, plus I added the shadow. Serille is the shortest character at 161 centimers, but what she lacks in height she makes up in fighting spirit. Serille is 30 years old and part of a resistance movement.

Something different


Sphereworks promotion 4

I really needed to do something different from the “A great Find” story. I’ve finished page 3, and also placed the flat colours version of page 4 in the portfolio section. So really all I would have to do, is finish up the colours of the final page. But I don’t have any fun in it anymore. This has been dragging on for quite a bit with the pages not really getting any better. I will let this rest for a long time or maybe completely leave it for what it is. I’ve learned a number of important lessons from it so perhaps better to put those into practice with a new project. And actually to get those lessons was the whole point of this story:

  • Do more thumbnails prior to start work on the pages to get the best layout of frames and actions
  • Plan out the scene by creating a map of all objects and characters and how they move through this map: this will keep the lightsource and backgrounds more consistent
  • Do more colour tests before hand. The pages are now big blobs of brownish grey, not very appealing
  • Don’t let a project like this drag on for so long. You loose focus and the end result will be not as good as it could be
  • Practice more action scenes

Anyway, the something different I mentioned: quick drawing I did. Turned out pretty nice so far I think.

Finally!

What started as a small project to get my blog integrated with my portfolio, took something like two months. But with one giant push this sunday to get all content transfered, it’s done. Or at least: for now. I tend to keep on tinkering with the stuff I create when I don’t have a deadline, so I’m sure that will happen here as well.

I haven’t tested it thoroughly, so there might be some stuff going wrong. If so, let me know. Or any other feedback for that matter.

The rest of the blog is coming along, but slowly. A minute here, a minute there to work on it. Let’s see if I can “finish” it soon though. Tweaking afterwards is always part of the process.

Well, not getting of to a brilliant start this year. I had hoped to finish the new blog design a bit faster and publish everything new there. This drawing is going to be part of the design and that’s not going very fast: I’m working on various other things at the same time right now.

The new blog should be done soon though and can already be found at sphereworks.gwtp.net.
